IIT Gandhinagar will soon have what could be the costliest campus in the country.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar is making a move towards hi-tech and green campus. To fulfill the requirements, the new campus of IIT Gandhinagar will be constructed at the cost of Rs. 1200 crore. The construction of the campus will start within 6-9 months accommodating 2400 students. The campus will exhibit environment-friendly green buildings in the country.
IIT Gandhinagar was set up in 2008-09 and it is amongst the 6 new IITs. To begin with the operations of the institute, it was allotted with the campus of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College at Gandhinagar. To start with its own campus, the institute has been allotted a 450-acre plot in Palej village of Gandhinagar district.
The Blueprint for the new campus is being made and buildings will be constructed with least amount of carbon emission. Director of IIT-GN Sudhir Jain said that the facilities and plans for the entire campus are being visualized on these lines. (Read more)
A Delhi-based consultancy has been given the contract to prepare the blueprint for the new campus. The institute conducted a competition of consultancy firms for making the blueprint and over 60 domestic and international firms have applied for the project.
The movement of the vehicles will be restricted in the premises and it will be a complete pedestrian zone. Air- conditioners will be replaced by air-cooling system. The new campus will have world class infrastructure and it will look like a township with all the must have facilities like dispensaries, shopping complex, banks, faculty quarters, students' hostels and so on.
